It’s always worth turning around on the way up…
If you’re longing for a bit of that white stuff to start falling out of the sky, but it’s just not coming, the answer is simple. Strap a couple of toboggans to your back and head for the hills! Personally, we’d had enough of waiting around for the snow to hit our coastal town, so we invested a fiver each in some penny sleds (basically plastic bin lids — without the handle), stuffed the car with jackets, gloves, hats, thermos flasks, yummy nibbles and waterproofs, and then bombed our way up to Fan Fawr in the Brecon Beacons. Here’s a little insight into the fun that ensued…

A bit of creativity with a climbing sling and you’ll save yourself carrying the toboggans up the mountain…

Thick snow over the mountain streams made tobogganing and walking interesting later in the day…

Although sometimes sinking to the thigh, making our way up the mountain was a right giggle!

At times crawling was easier…

But for some that meant wet gloves – whoops!

The view on summiting the first ascent was seriously beautiful…

Although super chilly, the wind whipped and whirled the snow up the mountain – stunning!

With such an amazing view into the valley, we had good warning of the approaching weather…

Bridget didn’t like it – though not entirely sure what there wasn’t to like…

You never knew when you were going to walk over a stream and sink to your hip again, so treading carefully was the name of the game…

Finally time for a bit of tobogganing… After sledding down some bumpy ground, we found a lovely smooth slope that made for a rather speedy descent :)

Bridget was the master of travelling backwards (and sometimes sidewards)…

LJ managed to keep her face free of snow – at least for the first couple of runs…

Tom was the Duracell Bunny, running up and down the slope to fit as many runs in as possible…

Part three of the adventure was to build a shelter for lunch. Cosy :)

But the sun didn’t last long. Maybe this was what Bridget saw earlier?

The smooth snow might be deceivingly inviting, but those mountain streams will catch you out!
